Hiking the Pitons - 1 Day

The Pitons are listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and rightfully so. These majestic mountains rising out of the Caribbean blue sea are a feat to behold. Hiking them is a must if you are an adventure traveler.

Though Petit Piton being  2,461 ft high and  Gros Piton 2,619 feet high; if you are not an avid hiker or climber, you should stick to conquering Gros Piton, which though higher, is not as steep.

Hiking Gros Piton takes approximately four hours—two hours to ascend and two to descend.

It is highly recommended that you hire a knowledgeable guide to help you  with your trek. Guides can be found through tour companies or at the beginning of the trail. Guides are there for your safety and to ensure that you stay on the trail.  Hiking Petit Piton without a highly experienced guide is never recommended because of its steep terrain and unmarked paths.

The trail opens at 6:30am, which is ideal to get ahead of the heat and humidity which makes your trek even harder.

Before your hike ensure you have proper hiking shoes, sunscreen , at least 1 litre of water which should be kept in your backpack. You will need your hands free to assist you in climbing.

Climbing the Pitons is definitely a challenge but it is worth it when you reach the summit. The spectacular views of the island are truly breathtaking and you will feel a sense of accomplishment.

Pickup at your hotel or Port of call aboard a taxi for the scenic ride along the west coast of St Lucia. Upon arrival at Fond Gens Libre, (named for the freedom fighters who used the area as a hideout during the 18th-century slave rebellion), your guide will be met at the nature interpretation center.
Peruse the center’s exhibits to learn about the wildlife and native flora found in the area, which will be helpful later to identify those species on your hike.
Start up the Gros Piton Nature Trail with your guide. The first section of which is a moderate trek around the base of the mountain.
As you wind around the mountain, enjoy panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and Choiseul Village. Look for local birds, some of them rare, like the St Lucia black finch and the St Lucian oriole.
At Anse L’lvrogne Canyon, explore the hideouts, tunnels and caves that were used by freedom fighters centuries ago.
The second part of the climb is strenuous, and suitable only for those in good physical condition. The summit of Grand Piton affords fantastic views of the entire island of St Lucia, as well as the twin peak of Petit Piton in the near distance.
After the 4-hour round-trip hike, return to the coach for transportation back to your hotel.
